Nigeria’s Biggest Night and What Tems, Wizkid, Burna Boy, and Asake Are Up Against

BET released its 2026 Awards nominations on Tuesday May 19 and Nigerian music delivered what it now regularly delivers at global stages. Tems, Wizkid, Burna Boy, and Asake all secured nominations. The ceremony holds on Sunday June 28, 2026, at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles. Comedian Druski hosts.

These nominations confirm what streaming numbers and touring figures have been showing for years. Nigerian Afrobeats is not a niche genre borrowing space at global awards shows. It is a core pillar of the global music conversation.

Tems: Leading the Nigerian Charge With Three Nominations

Tems leads the African contingent at the 2026 BET Awards with three nominations. BET nominated her for Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, the BET Her Award for her song First, and the Viewers’ Choice Award for Raindance, her collaboration with British rapper Dave.

Three nominations at the BET Awards reflects sustained commercial and critical relevance in a crowded and competitive market. Tems competes in the Best Female R&B/Pop Artist category against some of the biggest names in American music. Her presence in that conversation is itself the story.

Wizkid and Asake: A Historic First

BET nominated Wizkid and Asake jointly in the Best Group category. They are the first contemporary African artists to earn recognition in this category, which traditionally features American and British acts. Their collaborative project REAL Vol. 1 and a string of chart-topping releases earned them this recognition.

Their competition includes Clipse, FLO, Nas and DJ Premier, French Montana and Max B, and Metro Boomin and DJ Spinz. This is a serious field. The nomination already marks a landmark for African music’s standing at the BET Awards. A win would make history.

Burna Boy’s Continued Global Presence

BET nominated Burna Boy in the Best Collaboration category for WGFT, his feature on American rapper Gunna’s hit single from the 2025 album The Last Wun. This nomination extends a remarkable run of international recognition for Burna Boy that includes Grammy wins, multiple BET nominations, and a growing status as one of the most influential African artists of his generation.

His presence in the Best Collaboration category alongside the biggest names in American hip-hop reflects how Burna Boy positions himself. Not as an African act attempting international crossover. As a genuinely global artist whose collaborations with American, British, and Caribbean artists feel natural rather than calculated.

Nigerian Heritage Stars in Acting Categories Too

Beyond music, the 2026 BET Awards reflect Nigerian heritage influence in acting. BET nominated Ayo Edebiri and Cynthia Erivo for Best Actress. Damson Idris received a Best Actor nomination. These three actors represent a generation of performers of Nigerian descent operating as central figures in the international film and television conversation, not as exceptions breaking through.

The ceremony on June 28 will draw millions of Nigerian viewers from Lagos to London and everywhere in between. Whatever the results, the nominations already tell a powerful story about where Nigerian culture stands globally in 2026.
