Dangote Refinery Gears Up for Africa’s Biggest-Ever IPO — Up to $5 Billion on the Table

Aliko Dangote is preparing to make history — again. Africa’s wealthiest individual is moving ahead with plans to list his $20 billion petroleum refinery on multiple African stock exchanges in what would be the continent’s largest initial public offering ever recorded. The IPO could open as early as May, with analysts valuing the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals at between $40 billion and $50 billion.

Why this is historic

This is not simply a large fundraise. It is the first genuinely pan-African initial public offering — structured to allow investors across the continent to buy shares through their local exchanges, from the Lagos Stock Exchange to the Nairobi Securities Exchange, the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, and others. On April 1, the Nigerian Exchange Group convened the chief executives of five major African exchanges to discuss the framework for cross-border participation.

What the refinery means for Nigeria

The Dangote Refinery, located in the Ibeju-Lekki Free Zone, is already the world’s largest single-train crude processing facility. Operating at 650,000 barrels per day, it currently meets more than 90 percent of Nigeria’s petrol demand and has exported 456,000 tonnes of refined fuel to five African countries in a single month. Nigeria spent an estimated $10 billion annually on fuel imports before the refinery came online. That drain is being reversed.

How ordinary Nigerians can participate

For the first time, ordinary Nigerians — not just institutional investors or the wealthy elite — will have an opportunity to own a stake in the facility. Dangote has confirmed that Nigerians will be able to buy shares in naira, with dividends payable in either naira or US dollars. Financial advisors recommend monitoring the official prospectus filing, expected in April, before committing any funds.
