All 13 Kidnap Victims Rescued Along Makurdi-Otukpo Road in Benue State

The Rescue

All thirteen passengers abducted along the Makurdi-Otukpo road in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State have regained their freedom. The victims were rescued in the early hours of Sunday, April 20, in what sources described as a coordinated effort by security operatives and other stakeholders. No casualties were reported among the rescued victims, and the operation was described as successful by state authorities.

The Abduction

The victims were travelling along the busy Makurdi-Otukpo axis when armed men intercepted their vehicle and abducted all thirteen passengers. The route has seen a sharp increase in kidnap-for-ransom attacks in recent months, terrorising commuters and disrupting commercial activity across the region. Residents had expressed significant concern following the abduction, with many calling on security agencies to act urgently.

Security Operations

Security forces, working in coordination with local intelligence sources, tracked the abductors to their hideout and effected the rescue without direct confrontation. Details of the precise location of the rescue have been withheld for operational security reasons. The state Commissioner of Police confirmed that investigations are ongoing to apprehend the perpetrators.

The Broader Security Picture

Benue State has experienced escalating insecurity over the past several years, driven by a combination of herdsmen-farmer conflicts, armed banditry, and kidnapping syndicates that operate across the North Central zone. Governor Hyacinth Alia has repeatedly called on the Federal Government to increase security presence in the state and to address the root causes of the violence.

Community Relief

The news of the rescue was met with relief and celebration in Otukpo and surrounding communities, where residents have been living in fear following a series of attacks on commuters. Human rights groups have urged the government not only to rescue victims but to implement lasting security frameworks that address the structural vulnerabilities exploited by criminal actors.
