The Revenue Milestone
Nigerian artists collectively generated more than $43.8 million, equivalent to over sixty billion naira, in revenue from the Spotify streaming platform in 2025 alone. The figure, compiled from Music in Africa data, represents a significant increase from previous years and places the Nigerian music industry among the most commercially productive on the continent by a considerable margin.
Who Is Earning
The bulk of the revenue is concentrated among the top tier of Afrobeats artists, with Burna Boy, Wizkid, Asake, Rema, and Tems collectively accounting for a significant share of total streams. However, mid-tier artists and emerging acts are also seeing growing revenue as Spotify’s playlist algorithms increasingly surface Nigerian music to global audiences who were previously unfamiliar with the genre.
The Streaming Landscape
Spotify remains a critical but not the only platform for Nigerian music revenue. Audiomack, which offers a free streaming model to Nigerian users, generates significant engagement data but lower per-stream royalties. Apple Music, YouTube, and Boomplay collectively contribute a substantial additional revenue stream. The total cross-platform figure for 2025 is expected to significantly exceed the Spotify number alone.
Naira Reality
While the dollar figure is impressive, artists receiving royalties in naira terms have been significantly impacted by the currency’s devaluation over the past two years. A dollar-denominated streaming cheque that sounded large two years ago buys considerably less in Nigeria today. This dynamic has made international touring revenue and dollar-denominated brand deals even more critical for Nigeria’s top artists.
The Future
With Spotify continuing to expand its African market presence and algorithms being updated to surface more African content to global listeners, the trajectory for Nigerian music streaming revenue is strongly upward. The challenge for the industry is ensuring that the financial gains at the top translate into a healthier ecosystem that supports emerging artists and invests in domestic music infrastructure.
