Kylian Mbappe’s First Season at Real Madrid — Hits, Misses, and the Verdict

When Kylian Mbappe finally completed his long-anticipated move to Real Madrid last summer after years of speculation, courtship, and public drama, the expectation was that he would seamlessly slot into the galaxy of stars at the Bernabeu and immediately become the world’s best player. The reality, as it so often is with football, has been more complicated, more interesting, and ultimately more human.

The good

Mbappe has contributed 24 goals and 11 assists in all competitions — numbers that would be spectacular for most strikers and are merely ‘good’ for him. His Champions League performances have been exceptional: hat-trick against Manchester City in the quarter-finals, the decisive goal against Bayern Munich in the semis. When he is on form, no defender on earth wants to see him arriving with space.

The problems

La Liga has proven tougher to adapt to than the Champions League. Spanish defensive structures are more compact and compact than the wide-open spaces of Ligue 1 that Mbappe feasted on for years. His relationship with Vinicius Junior — another player accustomed to receiving the ball in the left channel — has required constant management. At times, both want the same space, the same ball, the same moment.

There have also been concerns about his defensive contribution. Ancelotti has addressed this publicly and privately, and Mbappe has visibly worked on his pressing game. The improvement has been notable but not yet complete.

The verdict

Year one at Madrid: B+. Exceptional in big moments, inconsistent in others, and still learning the demands of La Liga. The foundation is strong. Year two, with a full pre-season with his teammates, could be something extraordinary. Real Madrid, patient as ever, appear willing to wait.
