Scholarships in Germany 2026

Germany is doing something that most countries are not doing and it deserves to be said plainly at the start.

Public universities in Germany charge no tuition fees for international students. That includes Nigerian students, Ghanaian students, Kenyan students, every African student. The tuition is free. You pay a small semester administrative fee, typically between 100 and 350 euros per semester, but there are no tuition fees in the way that UK, US or Australian universities charge them.

This makes Germany uniquely positioned as an international education destination for African students who are academically qualified and motivated. Add the DAAD scholarship and several other major funding programmes that cover living costs on top of the free tuition and Germany becomes arguably the most financially accessible world-class education destination available to Nigerian students in 2026.

Here is every major scholarship programme, who qualifies and exactly how to apply.

DAAD Scholarships. The most important starting point.

The German Academic Exchange Service, known as DAAD from its German name Deutsche Akademische Austauschdienst, is the largest and most comprehensive scholarship organisation in Germany. It is funded by the German government and it offers dozens of different programmes for students and researchers at every level from bachelor’s through postdoctoral research.

The DAAD Scholarships for Development-Related Postgraduate Courses is the most relevant programme for most Nigerian applicants. It funds master’s degree studies at German universities in subjects connected to development challenges. Engineering, economics, agriculture, public health, urban planning, natural sciences and related fields. The scholarship covers living costs through a monthly stipend of 934 euros for master’s students, health insurance, travel costs to and from Germany and additional allowances.

According to DAAD’s own published data, approximately 140 development-related master’s programmes are currently eligible under this scheme and new ones are added regularly. You can search the full list on the DAAD database at daad.de/scholarships.

Eligibility requires a completed bachelor’s degree with above average grades, at least two years of professional work experience after your degree and before the start of the scholarship-funded programme, and the academic and professional profile that the specific programme requires.

“The DAAD receives applications from across Africa, Asia and Latin America and the competition is real. But the programme specifically prioritises development-related applications from Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa. A strong application from a Nigerian candidate in a priority field has genuine prospects.”

The Heinrich Böll Foundation Scholarship

The Heinrich Böll Foundation is affiliated with the German Green Party and it funds scholarships for graduate and postgraduate students who demonstrate academic excellence and a commitment to democratic values, sustainability, human rights and social justice.

The scholarship is open to international students studying in Germany and covers 850 euros per month for master’s students and 1,200 euros per month for doctoral students, plus additional allowances. The application is competitive and emphasises civic engagement and social commitment alongside academic ability.

Applications are submitted directly through the Heinrich Böll Foundation website at boell.de. The foundation holds scholarship holder seminars and events that are part of the scholarship experience and build genuine community among scholars.

The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Scholarship

The Konrad Adenauer Foundation is affiliated with the Christian Democratic Union party in Germany and it offers scholarships for highly qualified international students pursuing master’s or doctoral degrees at German universities.

The monthly stipend is 850 euros for master’s students and 1,200 euros for doctoral students. The selection criteria emphasise social commitment, leadership potential and academic excellence. The foundation has a particular focus on students who demonstrate potential for future leadership in their home countries, which aligns well with Nigerian applicants with strong professional and civic records.

Applications require two letters of recommendation from academic supervisors or employers, a motivational letter, CV, academic transcripts and a statement of purpose. Full details are at kas.de/scholarships.

The Friedrich Ebert Foundation Scholarship

The Friedrich Ebert Foundation is affiliated with the Social Democratic Party of Germany and it funds international students who demonstrate academic excellence and a commitment to social democratic values including equality, social justice and democratic participation.

Scholarships cover 850 euros per month for master’s students with additional health insurance and study allowances. The application process requires evidence of social and political engagement alongside academic qualifications.

The Erasmus Plus Programme

Erasmus Plus is funded by the European Union and it offers multiple funding mechanisms for international students studying in Europe. For Nigerian students the most relevant stream is the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree programme, which funds full master’s degrees delivered across multiple European universities simultaneously.

Erasmus Mundus scholarships cover full tuition fees, a monthly living allowance, travel costs and insurance. They are available to non-EU students including Nigerians and the selection is highly competitive but genuinely open to strong African applicants.

The full list of Erasmus Mundus programmes is searchable at erasmus-plus.ec.europa.eu. Each joint master programme has its own application process, deadline and specific eligibility requirements. Research each programme individually rather than applying through a single central portal.

“Erasmus Mundus is genuinely different from single-university scholarships because it gives you the experience of studying across multiple European countries and institutions within a single degree. The network you build and the European perspective you develop are part of the value alongside the academic qualification.”

German government scholarships through bilateral agreements

Germany has bilateral educational agreements with Nigeria that create specific scholarship channels outside the major foundations. The German Embassy in Abuja publishes information on these bilateral scholarship opportunities and it is worth checking the embassy website directly at nigeria.diplo.de for current opportunities that may not appear on the major scholarship databases.

The application strategy that works

Apply to multiple programmes simultaneously with tailored applications rather than sending the same document to every programme. Each scholarship has a distinct identity and values that are reflected in what its selection committees look for. The DAAD prioritises development relevance. The Heinrich Böll Foundation prioritises environmental and democratic values. The Konrad Adenauer Foundation prioritises leadership potential and democratic commitment. Understanding these differences and writing to each of them specifically is the difference between a competitive application and a generic one.

Start your applications six to nine months before the deadline. DAAD applications typically close in October for the following year. Foundation scholarships have varying deadlines that change annually.

Learn basic German before you arrive regardless of whether your programme is taught in English. Germany is more navigable, more comfortable and more enjoyable with even conversational German. The investment repays itself continuously throughout your time there.

Your degree from a German university, obtained for free or with full scholarship support, is internationally recognised and carries genuine weight in the global job market. For Nigerian students who qualify and prepare properly, Germany is not just an education destination. It is one of the best investments available in your professional future.
