Nigeria Wins Bid to Host 2026 Africa Tech Summit — What It Means for the Economy

Nigeria has been selected as the host country for the 2026 Africa Tech Summit, beating bids from Kenya, South Africa, and Rwanda to secure the continent’s most prestigious annual technology conference. The announcement was made by the Africa Tech Summit secretariat at a ceremony in Geneva, Switzerland, with Lagos confirmed as the host city.

The Africa Tech Summit annually attracts over 5,000 delegates including heads of state, venture capital investors, startup founders, and technology executives from across Africa, Europe, Asia, and North America. Previous editions have been held in Kigali, Cape Town, and Nairobi.

Why Nigeria won the bid

Nigeria’s pitch centered on its position as Africa’s largest startup ecosystem by deal volume, the depth of its developer talent pool, and a new bilateral technology investment treaty the government recently signed with the European Union. The Minister of Communications credited the country’s growing reputation in fintech, healthtech, and e-commerce as decisive factors in the selection.

Economic impact projections

Economists at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry have estimated that hosting the summit will generate approximately $45 million in direct economic activity — through hotel bookings, event services, transportation, and tourism. More significantly, the conference is expected to facilitate investment announcements targeting Nigerian tech startups, building on the $1.2 billion in venture capital that flowed into the Nigerian tech ecosystem in 2024.

Preparations under way

The government has already identified the Eko Convention Centre and the Lagos Oriental Hotel complex as the primary venues. A local organising committee co-chaired by the Lagos State Governor and the Minister of Communications will oversee planning over the next 18 months. Visa-on-arrival protocols for participating delegates are expected to be fast-tracked.
