Pope Leo XIV landed in Yaoundé, Cameroon on Wednesday as part of a four-nation Africa tour. The country has been gripped by a violent separatist conflict in its Anglophone regions for nearly a decade. When the Pope’s visit was announced, armed groups fighting for the independent state of ‘Ambazonia’ declared a three-day ceasefire — specifically to allow him safe passage to a peace meeting scheduled for Thursday.
The power of moral authority
Armed groups that have refused dialogue with the Cameroonian government laid down their weapons — temporarily — because a man who represents something larger than politics asked them to consider peace. Pope Leo XIV said in Algeria: ‘God’s heart is torn apart by wars, violence, injustice and lies.’
The Trump feud follows him to Africa
Trump has accused Leo of being ‘weak on crime’ for his opposition to the Iran war. On the plane to Algeria, Leo said: ‘I have a moral duty to speak out against war. I have no fear, neither of the Trump administration, nor speaking out loudly about the message of the Gospel.’ The first American Pope is now the most prominent American voice in the world calling for peace — and the American President is attacking him publicly for it.
