Trump Blockades Iran, Feuds With the Pope, and Says the War Is ‘Almost Over’ — The World Holds Its Breath

For the second consecutive day on Wednesday, the United States military maintained a complete naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz — the narrow waterway through which roughly 20 percent of the world’s daily oil supply passes. At least fifteen US warships, including an aircraft carrier and eleven destroyers, are positioned across the corridor. Brent crude oil prices have risen approximately 40 percent since the conflict began and are approaching $100 per barrel. President Trump told reporters the war with Iran is ‘close to over.’ Iranian state media has not signalled any agreement.

The Pope enters the conflict

Pope Leo XIV — the Chicago-born priest who became the first American ever elected as head of the Catholic Church — has condemned what he called the ‘delusion of omnipotence’ driving the US-Israeli military campaign in Iran. Trump responded by calling the Pope ‘wrong’ and ‘very weak on crime.’ Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni broke ranks and said Trump’s attacks on the Pontiff were ‘unacceptable.’ The Pope replied: ‘I have no fear, neither of the Trump administration, nor speaking out loudly about the message of the Gospel.’

Oil markets and global impact

US Energy Secretary Chris Wright told a Washington summit that oil prices will ‘likely continue rising’ until meaningful ship traffic gets through the waterway again. For every country that imports refined fuel, petrol prices are climbing.

What happens next

Pakistan’s Prime Minister announced a diplomatic mission to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey to help mediate a second round of US-Iran peace talks. The most credible path to de-escalation appears to be a negotiated freeze — a face-saving formula for both sides rather than a clear winner.
