Trump Extends Israel-Lebanon Ceasefire by Three Weeks After Washington Talks

The Extension

President Donald Trump announced on April 24, 2026, that the Israel-Lebanon ceasefire had been extended by three weeks following a second round of peace talks hosted in Washington. The extension came after intensive diplomatic activity involving US, Israeli, and Lebanese officials, and provides a renewed window for negotiations on a more durable political resolution to the crisis.

Why Washington Is Hosting

The shift of negotiations from Pakistan to Washington reflects a deliberate US decision to assert direct ownership over the diplomatic process. The Islamabad talks, while providing initial momentum, ran into complications over the Iranian cargo ship seizure by the US Navy. By hosting the next round in Washington, the Trump administration signals that it is personally invested in an outcome before the Iran ceasefire deadline also comes under pressure.

Israel Kills Lebanese Journalist

The ceasefire extension was announced against a backdrop of continued violence. Israeli attacks on Lebanon killed at least five people on April 23, including Lebanese journalist Amal Khalil, according to Al Jazeera reporting. The killing of a journalist during an active ceasefire period drew immediate international condemnation and threatens to destabilise the fragile diplomatic progress.

The Sticking Points

Negotiations remain complicated by several unresolved issues: Israel’s insistence on maintaining its buffer zone in southern Lebanon, Hezbollah’s continued weapons stockpiling, and the question of whether Lebanon’s government can assert sovereignty over areas currently under Israeli occupation. The three-week window is considered tight given the complexity of the underlying issues.

What Ordinary People Are Experiencing

In southern Lebanon, tens of thousands of displaced civilians are attempting to return home, many finding their villages partially or wholly destroyed. Reconstruction has not yet begun, aid remains insufficient, and the constant uncertainty over whether the ceasefire will hold makes long-term planning impossible. The human cost of the conflict continues to mount even as diplomats negotiate in air-conditioned offices in Washington.
