Three of Nigeria’s most popular relocation destinations moved the goalposts this year, and the changes are not small ones.
The UK, the US, and Canada have all tightened their visa systems for Nigerians in 2026. Anyone still planning a japa move needs to understand exactly what changed before they submit another application.
The US Cut Visa Duration Sharply
Washington reduced non-immigrant, non-diplomatic visa duration for Nigerians down to three months, with single-entry only. Multiple-entry visas that once lasted years are effectively gone for most applicants.
This shift affects business travellers the hardest. Anyone who used to make repeat US trips on one visa now needs to reapply constantly, and each application carries its own risk of rejection.
The UK Switched To Digital eVisas
Starting July 15, most Nigerians applying for UK study or work visas now receive a digital eVisa instead of a passport sticker. Applicants still visit a Visa Application Centre for biometrics, but the physical stamp is gone.
“This is a further big step to a fully digital UK immigration system,” a UK Home Office representative explained, framing the change as modernisation rather than restriction.
The UK also expanded its list of nationalities requiring visas before transiting through the country, and Nigeria remains firmly on that list.
Canada Raised The Financial Bar
Canada increased the minimum proof-of-funds requirement for Express Entry applicants. Single applicants must now show access to roughly N17 million, up from the previous threshold. Two-person households face an even steeper number.
Student intake limits are also tighter this year, driven partly by housing pressure across Canadian cities.
None of these three countries closed their doors completely. They just raised the price of entry, in time, in money, and in patience. Anyone still chasing the japa dream in 2026 needs a bigger cushion and a longer runway than they did even twelve months ago.
