What’s Actually Driving This Decision
Saudi authorities have not issued a formal public explanation, but the timing tells its own story. The kingdom is deep into aggressive Saudization policies right now, pushing employers to hire more Saudi nationals across sectors like tourism and hospitality.
Quotas for foreign block visas are tightening steadily between 2026 and 2028. Employers targeting African countries, Nigeria included, are seeing new applications frozen and existing ones delayed.
“No new block visa quota would be issued by employers targeting the affected African countries,” according to guidance shared by immigration authorities, a line that has already reshaped travel plans for thousands of Nigerian workers.
What This Means If You’re Planning A Trip
Nigerians still hoping to travel to Saudi Arabia now face a longer, more traditional visa process instead of the faster eVisa route available to other nationalities. Business travellers, religious pilgrims, and workers all fall into this slower lane.
This exclusion joins a growing pattern. The US already shortened visa validity for Nigerians this year. The UK moved most Nigerian applicants onto digital eVisas with tighter scrutiny attached. Canada raised the proof-of-funds requirement for Express Entry applicants.
Nigeria is not being singled out by one country anymore. It is becoming a pattern across multiple borders at once, and anyone planning international travel this year needs to build extra time into every application.
