For the first time since 1993, Israeli and Lebanese diplomats sat across a negotiating table from one another in Washington, under the facilitation of American mediators. The symbolism was considerable: two countries that have technically been in a state of war for decades, engaging in direct conversation with the explicit goal of working toward a formal peace framework.
Hezbollah’s rejection
Before the talks had properly found their footing, Hezbollah’s leader publicly rejected the entire process. This placed Lebanese diplomats in an immediately difficult position — negotiating on behalf of a state whose most powerful armed faction had publicly refused to acknowledge the process.
What comes next
American mediators are expected to continue pushing for a framework agreement. The path to any lasting resolution in southern Lebanon runs through Hezbollah whether the international community acknowledges it or not. The question is whether there is any offer on the table that could bring them in.
