Nigeria has a new kind of history-maker.
On June 18, 2026, Guinness World Records officially named Hilda Baci a GWR Icon. She becomes the first Nigerian, and the first African human, to receive this specific global honour. The only other living being resident in Africa to hold the title is Jonathan the tortoise, the oldest terrestrial animal on earth, based in the British Overseas Territory of St Helena. Hilda Baci now shares that rarefied company.

In May 2023, she gripped global attention by cooking continuously for 93 hours and 11 minutes in Lagos, setting the record for the longest individual cooking marathon. Thousands of supporters followed her progress physically at the venue and online across the world. In September 2025, she led a team that prepared an 8,780-kilogram serving of Nigerian-style jollof rice in Victoria Island, a feat that simultaneously broke the record for the largest serving of rice ever recorded globally. The meal fed more than 16,600 people.

Baci reflected on the scale of what her journey has become. She said she had unwavering faith in what she was doing but never imagined how far it could go or how much impact it would make.
